My grandparents had been married over 50 years when my Pappa passed away (Nanna is 90 and still going strong). Mum and Dad for 29 this year, and Simon and I for nearly 3 months. Nanna and Pappa came to the Big Smoke from the country to get married while Simon and I escaped the city for wine country. Mum and Dad were married at the same hotel I had my 21st birthday party at. These three photos tell a lot about our family, but I’m looking to find out about yours.

Have you or someone you know been married 10 years this year? 20 years? 30, 40 or 50 years? I’m looking for 5 couples to be involved in a special project regarding wedding photos. In order to be involved, you must be

situated within 150km of Melbourne

married for 10 years this year, or 20/30/40/50 years

willing to share your original wedding photos

happy to be interviewed and photographed and have the results shared on the internet and in print (i.e. sign a model release)

available during May for the interview/photos

In exchange for your time and memories, I’m offering a mini portrait session for your family. You, your husband or wife and something that is special to you – whether they are children big or small, human or pets, or just your home or garden. We’ll have a chat about the wedding photos and then take some new photos – all up about 2-3 hours of your time. You will receive copies of all photos on USB and a little anniversary gift from me, too. If you are or know the right couple, please send an email to kate@urbansafari.com.au and tell me a little about the couple and their wedding story. If you have an electronic copy of a wedding photos, please include it! I hope to arrange interviews for late May, so please have emails to me no later than Wednesday 15 May. I look forward to hearing your stories!

Today is an exciting day, one that we (Simon especially) have been waiting for for months. We’re flying to Darwin at lunchtime and on Friday we’ll head to East Timor to participate in the Tour de Timor, a 6-day, 650km mountain bike race. Simon is riding Blue Juice, his faithful steed, and I’ll be joining the media team to take plenty of photos.

We’ll travel through 6 checkpoints, across the border into Indonesia at one point, back into Timor, and spend 6 nights camping with 400 other riders and volunteers. I have packed earplugs! I’ll be more concerned about finding power to charge my camera batteries than finding a hot shower but I can guarantee there will be swimming and/or snorkelling.

We’re so excited to finally be on our adventure! I will not have telephone or internet access while in Timor, so if you need to get in touch please email me and I’ll respond as soon as we’re back on September 18.

I can relate to the sore feet. But if you’re reading this, you’ve made your way to my website, so thanks! We had a huge day, and were honestly excited to meet so many brides-to-be!

I thought I’d share some photos of my stand – we were really happy with how it turned out, considering it was my first ever bridal expo. Certainly helps having an architect fiancé to help you out (even if he did play Jenga with my USBs). Simon and I are doing it all again tomorrow – are we mad?!

It was a gorgeous sunny day, and the morning kicked off nicely with a delivery of these pretty things! They opened up today and were looking particularly photogenic, so I thought I’d share them by creating a free wallpaper for you to download.

It’s 2500 px wide so should fit most screens, although the aspect ratio might get a bit funky at some resolutions.

This image is for personal use only. It’s big enough to print if you’d like it on paper, but please don’t on-sell or remove the watermark! Thanks!

As significant as photos are, what we do with them afterwards is just as important as capturing them in the first place. It is great to share them with friends and family online, on your phone, on an iPad. But these things don’t last, technology constantly updates, and without something more physical it can be too easy to lose track of your image files. I provide clients with a USB of their photographs, and I love knowing that they’ve got prints framed and on the wall. I also keep back-ups, but I can’t keep everyone’s photos forever. And unfortunately, it’s so easy to lose a USB, a CD, to drop an external drive, to have a virus wipe your computer.

My Nanna is 90 this year, and I’m making her a book. I am scanning as many old photos as I can find from her life, and collecting them in one history to keep and read many times over. Some of the yellowed prints are the only memory of an old friend, a relative – and now we can compile these into her story. Of course she will get the First Edition, and other members of the family can have copies too. She can take it to her weekly bridge game, to share with her friends (she still drives, but the way). Her great-grandchildren can take it to school for Show & Tell. And I can keep it on my bookcase, to take down and browse without worrying about flat batteries.

I love the process of going through a photo session, arranging the photos on a page, and adding the details to tell the whole story. My eyes go square sitting in front of my computer for the hours it takes to create, but when I’m curled up on the couch, leafing through and remembering that day, that holiday, that person’s life, the headache fades away and it could be any point in time, but that book will always work.

After about a month’s break to move to Melbourne, enjoy Christmas at home in Adelaide with family and a wedding in Sydney, things are now back in full swing at Urban Safari! Happy New Year to everyone – 2011 was pretty amazing for us (especially the last day!!!) and I can’t wait to see what 2012 has in store.

In March, I was published internationally in Vanity Fair UK, featuring travel photos from around South Australia. Simon and I travelled to China, Singapore and Europe, stopping by the Vogue offices in London to pick up some copies of the magazine

In May we moved to Darwin, and explored a number of spots in Darwin and the Northern Territory. I met some lovely Darwin families for both weddings and family photos, all while enjoying northern Australia’s tropical climate, culture and cuisine.

In October I went back to Adelaide for The AIPP Event, picking up all sorts of inspirations and making plans for bigger and better things for Urban Safari Photographer. I’ve just posted some photos from my last job in Darwin, and what a job it was! Short of meeting him, photographing the President of the USA and our own Australian Prime Minister was a completely awesome experience. Earlier in the year, I met Kevin Rudd, our foreign minister and ex-Prime Minister, so it’s been politicians all round!

With a number of friend’s weddings in Adelaide over the last 6 months, and 3 coming up in February, I shall be well prepared for my own after getting engaged on the last day of 2011 to my partner-in-crime, Simon. We were on a rock-climbing trip in the Blue Mountains, and took a rest day to see the Three Sisters and Katoomba Falls when he pulled out a little black box and a bit of bling! We are stoked and looking forward to planning our wedding for February, 2013.
